Do they know it’s Christmas?

Christmas approaches again and we sit down in our cosy offices drawing up a list of which customers and suppliers should get the nice Chardonnay, the quaffable Chilean red or maybe even a luxury hamper. It’s a tradition at most companies and I for one certainly enjoy giving – and receiving!

Last year, however, PSU reviewed this tradition. Instead of contributing to those post-Christmas hangovers we decided to make a £1,000 donation to a local charity that I have a particular affinity with. That charity is the Cheltenham Animal Shelter and we’ve decided to do the same this year.

Under even greater pressure at Christmas

All year the animal shelter overflows with the pitiful sight of abandoned and unwanted pets including dogs, cats, rabbits and many other small furry (and feathered) creatures.

At Christmas, the pressure on the charity is further exacerbated by the trend of buying that cute little puppy for junior – only to find that 'little Tyson' needs as much (or more) attention as junior’s feeding and toileting activities. The all-too-frequent outcome? Another little pup ends up on the street and the youngster, who is often too young to understand, is heartbroken. Sadly, this Christmas will see many of Gloucestershire’s unwanted seasonal pets become the problem of the Cheltenham Animal Shelter and other similar shelters across the UK.

Relying on our support

As a charity Cheltenham Animal Welfare relies on generous public support to help it look after the 1500 dogs, cats and small animals which pass through their doors each year. At present the shelter isn’t eligible for National Lottery or Government funding. Instead, it relies on the generosity of supporters like you and I to meet its £0.5 million annual running costs.

Just £15 means the world to a dog or cat over Christmas

Because the shelter has its own on-site veterinary surgery, all the animals receive the veterinary treatments they require immediately. Your support ensures that this level of care can continue, giving homeless animals arriving at the shelter the best possible care until loving new homes are found.

  • £5 provides flea and worm treatment for one dog or cat
  • £10 provides vaccinations for one dog or cat
  • £15 feeds one dog or cat for a month

Cheltenham Animal Welfare would very much appreciate your support.
